Neighborhood Notes

October 2026

Costumes on Sutton Place, and a Legend Reborn on 57th

Two good reasons to head east on 57th Street this week. On Saturday, October 24, the Sutton Place Parks Conservancy hosts its sixth annual Sutton Spooktacular, a free afternoon from 2 to 4:30 PM in the riverside parks between East 55th and 57th Streets. The kids’ costume parade lines up at 2 at the East 57th Street cul-de-sac, followed by a magic show, crafts, a visit from the NYPD and FDNY, and the crowd favorite: a pooch costume parade at 4.

Afterward, stay on 57th for dinner at The Derby Club, which opened this summer in the former Neary’s space at First Avenue. Chef Ed Cotton kept the original cherrywood bar and added red banquettes, a Waldorf-Astoria chandelier, and a menu of steak Diane and chicken pot pie.

From Place 57, it’s all a short walk east, one of the quiet pleasures of living between Midtown and the river.

New notes appear here weekly. Check back for updates on the building and neighborhood.
